Majoring in Graphic Design at 51°µÍř, Jordan Love (Hometown: Russell, Kentucky) wanted to combine her passion of visual communication with a strong desire to create something meaningful.
“I’m drawn to the versatility of graphic design, as it provides endless opportunities to work across diverse industries throughout my career, allowing me to continuously learn and grow while contributing to impactful projects,” she said.
Connecting with her classmates within her courses, Love enjoys being able to share ideas and build her skills with others in her major.
“I love open discussions and getting to learn not only from my professors but from my classmates as well,” she said.
Finding ways to share her art with the campus and surrounding community, one of Love’s favorite memories at SSU was when she won first place in the Student Art Show.
“The experience helped prove to me I have a chance in the field,” she said on winning the award. “It gave me a lot of confidence that has truly had an impact on me and my work.”
Completing an internship at the Southern Ohio Museum & Cultural Center, Love has increased her knowledge of the career opportunities that are available to her after graduation and is exploring ways to connect with people through her art.Â
“I would like to use my degree to be able to connect with as many people as possible in my lifetime,” she said. “Career-wise, I have been looking at art direction in the beauty industry as well as museum education.”
To others considering majoring in Graphic Design, Love encourages them to explore the skills they can gain not just in art and design but in professional development as well.
“If you have a passion for art and design, along with well-developed communication skills, I highly recommend pursuing graphic design,” she said. “This major allows you to creatively express ideas while also solving visual challenges.”
SSU’s Graphic Design & Interactive Media degree allows students to explore their interests in 3D, interactive media, or class illustration. Courses focus on allowing students to display ideas and experiences through imagery and text. Graduates of the program have found work in traditional design roles such as publishing books, magazines, and posters, but the career field has also expanded to new opportunities in the digital space including in apps, webpages, and games.
