Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome: Recognition, Care, and Prevention

Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) is a withdrawal condition affecting newborns exposed to opioids and other substances in utero. Scioto County has some of the highest incidences of substance abuse in the state, prevention and care are vital for this community. In this presentation, I will cover what the syndrome is, how it is treated, and what people can do to care for these infants from a nursing perspective. Addressing NAS is not only about treating withdrawal but also advocating for maternal support and early intervention strategies to improve long-term outcomes.

Childhood and Motherhood: An Exploration of the Works of Toni Morrison

Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison is renowned for her various novels on the complexities of race and gender. Two particularly powerful themes that she focuses on are childhood and motherhood. The lives of Black people, particularly Black women, are masterfully depicted using the coming-of-age story and mother-child dynamics. Depictions of racism and sexism through a child's point of view are used to explore the effects of these harmful systemic issues during the formative years. Complicated and toxic mother-child relationships demonstrate the effects of race-based generational trauma with overpowering, misunderstood, or estranged forms of "mother-love". This conference takes a close look at these themes and how they function in Morrison's novels泭Sula,泭A Mercy,泭The Bluest Eye,Song of Solomon,泭and泭Beloved.泭
